So, after that initial shit is over with, some egghead walks in and mentions Stone Temple Pilots and proceeds to say "OH STP IS THE BEST GRUNGE BAND" when they're nowhere near as good as them (maybe better at songwriting than Pearl Jam, but musically Pearl Jam is far better). Then someone else comes in the thread and says "I think is a better band than Soundgarden" without any argument. Then somebody responds with either "No, is better than Superunknown", OR "No, is better". Let's just say he mentions Superunknown like OP did.

Somebody posts either Superunknown, Ten, Dirt or In Utero, then follows it up with "This is the best grunge album".

Yes, Adams main tone is his Super Bass plus whatever other amps and no, he isn't known to use fuzz pedals, but that tone on several of those songs, even if it's just for part of the song, IS fuzz.Every fucking grunge thread starts and ends the same way. Again, there's a chance that they did a lot of weird stuff in the studio to make him sound exactly like he was playing through a fuzz, but what would be the point. I could own ever guitar and amp that Adam ever used and still I would have a much easier time figuring out that tone with my own gear and one or two of my fuzz pedals. That is not a natural tone that happens between guitar and amp, it's a tone that comes from a fuzz pedal. I've owned a lot of high gain amps including quite a few that Adam is known to use and they do not get that tone. Unfortunately, not many regular fuzz users even listen to Tool, so they probably won't even open this thread, but that tone is absolutely fuzz. How he got that tone doesn't really matter, IT IS FUZZ. There MIGHT be some kind of Wierd studio magic there with distorting germanium preamps or something that we will never know, but I bet Adam owns plenty of his own fuzz pedals and I'm sure he knew that he could get that tone much easier with fuzz. That tone is not his "core tone", that is not a tone he regularly uses at all. The intro is just guitar and it's easy to hear the tone clearly. Listen to the video of Pushit that he posted on the first page. The OP understands the difference though. That's exactly what I thought this thread was going to be, someone who thought Adams usual high gain tone was fuzz, while it is really just high gain amp distortion. A lot of people don't understand the difference between fuzz and distortion and a lot of people even think fuzz is just "more" than distortion. Take everything with a bucket of salt.Īdams core tone is definitely not fuzz, granted, that's true.

No matter what they say, theres a good chance a lot of its not true. Even the way he rolls his first finger off of the D string and plucks the A on Jambi, very unique, not seen often.Ĥ.) Tool is king of misinformation. His palm mutes in particular are very unique.

He has everything else there and his amps in full view.ģ.) The way AJ picks and frets is almost as big a part of his tone as the equipment.

We've seen his pedal board, we know the amps he plays with (2 diezels now plus SB,) if the fuzz was that key to his tone he would have it on his board. build some kind of fuzz into his Superbass then hes simply not using it. hasn't used fuzz pedals to get his core tone. Secondly, the guy doesn't, or I should say. Its a custom job, no one knows what Billy did. Yup, its the marshall, not the diezel or mesas or Bogners or anything else. First, the superbass was modified by Billy Howerdel and is THE CORE of his tone. Bogners imho.Ģ.) Though you may get closer to some of Adam's tones with a fuzz pedal. This is a result of it coming out of Mesa Cabs vs. I've seen Tool 3 times live, the Jambi sound is different live. There's a significantly good chance the sound on Jambi is a Bogner mixed with the other two amps. Hey all, I might be able to add a bit to this thread.ġ.) On 10,000 days there was always the Diezel and the Superbass running, Barresi would pull in a third amp depending on what the song needed.
